About Wallz

Wallz is a free, fast, online version of the classic wall-and-pawn racing game, built to feel as good as it plays.

What it is

Wallz is a head-to-head abstract strategy game on a 9×9 board. Each turn you either move your pawn one square or drop a wall to slow your opponent; the first pawn to reach the far side wins. It takes about a minute to learn and rewards months of play. The rules are simple, but managing ten walls against a thinking opponent never stops being interesting. New here? Start with the rules.

Why we built it

The wall-and-pawn racing format has been loved for decades, but playing it online has usually felt clunky: laggy boards, awkward wall placement, ugly screens. Wallz exists to fix the feel. Smooth 60-frames-per-second animation, instant matchmaking, and a board that behaves identically whether you're using a mouse or your thumb. The game is old and great; our job is just to give it the interface it deserves.

Ways to play

  • Ranked: climb an Elo ladder and a live leaderboard against other players.
  • Casual: the same game with no rating on the line, and no sign-in required.
  • Play a friend: start a private game and share the code, or challenge someone on your friends list.
  • Vs computer: practice against an opponent whose difficulty you set, from gentle to genuinely tough.
  • Hot-seat: pass one device back and forth for local two-player games.

Built for every screen

Desktop and mobile are equal targets, not an afterthought. Wall placement is designed for touch and pointer alike, so the game feels native wherever you open it.

Free to play

Wallz is free. If you have a question, a bug, or an idea, we'd genuinely like to hear it. Get in touch.
